Wollongong: Man charged after car torched

A man has been charged after an allegedly stolen car was set alight in the carpark of a Wollongong motel this morning.

Police were called to the Gladstone Avenue motel about 3am and found a silver Hyundai Santa Fe four-wheel-drive well alight.

The fire was extinguished before checks revealed the car had been stolen from a Mount Warrigal home last week.

Following an investigation and tip-offs from the public, a 42-year-old man was arrested at Wollongong police station this morning.

He was charged with stealing a motor vehicle and malicious damage by fire.

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today.
