Youth injection helps satisfying soccer win

Men’s: Geographe 1 v Margaret River 4

THE Margaret River men’s soccer team returned to the winner’s circle on Sunday with an emphatic victory at Geographe, despite a few players missing due to illness.

The team was filled with players from the Youth squad – Jesse Gunnis in goal, Jake Sales in defence and Ethan Delatte in attack, while Josh Brown made his debut from the 15s.

What made this victory even sweeter was Geographe had half their team made up of League players.

The early skirmishes saw both sides playing fast attacking soccer. Midway through the first half Redar Saber opened the scoring after a great run from the defence, leaving the keeper no chance. Garry Holmes made it two just before half-time from the penalty spot as a result of a handball in the penalty area.

The Margaret River team could sense a win and took to the second half with a determination that has been missing for a few weeks. It wasn’t long before a third goal went in – a strike from Alex Costa took a deflection and wrong-footed the Geographe keeper.

The attacks came thick and fast and once again Garry Holmes scored from the penalty spot after a poorly-timed tackle in the penalty area. As Margaret River pushed for more they were caught on the break and Geographe scored a consolation goal with only minutes remaining.

Congratulations to the whole team for a great display. After a few frustrating weeks the win was richly deserved, and the team song was sung loud and hard.
