Kings extinguish the Flames

Kings bounced back from a narrow loss the previous week to sneak home 43-38 over Flames in the latest round of junior basketball.

The closeness and topsy-turvy nature of the match was clearly evident in the score at the end of each quarter.

Kings looked comfortable leading 12-4 at the first break, but were shocked out of any complacency when Flames then hit back to take the second 14-8, leaving Kings in front by just two points at half-time.

The Flames were only wispy smoke in the third quarter, zero points on their side of the ledger, while Kings knocked in 12 to leap ahead by 14 points.

Apparently most of the answers were in the huddle at the final break, as the points came thick and fast, the Flames completely dominating the last quarter.

But the horse had already bolted into the distance in the previous quarter and the Kings were still five points clear at the final whistle.

Tom Lawson 18 points, Jovi Zulueta 13 and Jade Cooksley six steered the Kings to victory.

With Jake Madden scored 17 for the Flames, Jordan Clementson eight and aided by several timely rebounds from Amy Young, Flames almost chased down the oppositions substantial lead.

Padraigh Hickey’s 16 points, but more importantly his overall improvement since the competition started, was the main difference between Tigers and Rangers, Tigers winning 53-43.

With the semi-finals only a couple of weeks away, opposition teams will have to produce serious defensive strategies to restrict his scoring chances if they are to get a win over the competition leaders in the remaining two rounds.

Although Rangers prospects of a win looked grim, trailing 29-10 at half-time, when Hickey was substituted they hit back strongly in the second half to give them a chance.

There were two other Tigers players in double figures, Matt Perring and Amanda Consadine with 10 points each, Matt Blackmann nine and Cara Hickey eight.

Liam Young once again top scored for Rangers with 23 points, the indefatigable Archie Roberts eight, Tom Dowell six and Ben Swords 5.

Today’s draw

4pm Rangers V Kings

5pm Tigers V Flames
