Kandos Public School principal Alan Kerr will use his 2012-2013 Leadership Fellowship to study in the USA.
Mr Kerr is chairman of the Cudgegong Learning Community (CLC) a group of over 20 schools from Ilford to Dunedoo.
His research will focus on a program in the USA, The System for Teacher and Student Advancement (TAP), which aims to improve teacher quality.
“It’s a systematic program that develops teacher quality, it’s been implemented at the Lucia Mar district which is a group of schools in California,” Mr Kerr said.
“I aim to travel over there, probably in March, which will coincide with the annual conference of the program.
“It’s a great opportunity for professional growth but I also hope after seeing what goes on over there to bring back some information to be able to implement into our local group of schools and Kandos Public.”
Mr Kerr said that when he was researching the program he saw that there similarities between the Lucia Mar district and the local CLC.
“It’s a group of schools in America implementing the program and I thought that there were parallels between that group of schools and the Cudgegong Learning Community,” he said.
“And basically I’ll be looking at the challenges of implementing that program and the impact on student achievement.”
While he will be bringing ideas back for the CLC Mr Kerr said he has “very receptive” staff that he also looks forward to trying out new things with.
“At Kandos Public School amongst the staff there’s a great team approach to developing teacher quality so I’ll be able to contribute more to that process,” he said.
“And really it’s about getting the best outcomes for Kandos Public School students.
“It’s a really good school so it’s good to know I’ll be coming back with some ideas that the teachers will be keen to hear about.”
Mr Kerr said his study will focus on opportunities for career advancement, professional growth, and accountability.
As a recipient of a 2012-2013 Leadership Fellowship, Principal of Kandos Public School, Alan Kerr, will research leading professional learning communities and teams.270812/spLeadership/007
